Middlesbrough And Norwich City Clash In Championship Finals
AFC Bournemouth and Watford automatically qualified for the 2015-16 Premier League season by finishing 1×2 at the top of the Championship table. The third qualifying team will be known at the conclusion of the Championship playoffs on May 25th that will see either Middlesbrough or Norwich City elevated to the top division next season.
The Boro and the Canaries won their respective semifinal clashes. Both teams were the home sides in the second leg of the semis, and home field advantage worked in their favour.
Middlesbrough cruised to an easy 3-0 win and an aggregate 5-1 series win over Brentford to advance to the finals. Norwich City delivered a commendable 3-1 victory over Ipswich Town, which added up to a 4-2 aggregate score to finish the series.
With promotion on the line, this is a huge game for both sides and fans can surely bet on an incredible football game at Wembley next week. But the motivation for the two sides is very different.
Middlesbrough was relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2008-09 Premier League season, and has remained in the middle tier for the last six years. Only one more victory and the Boro can reclaim their place in the top flight with potential to contend for the Premier League trophy next season.
Norwich City was one of three teams relegated to the Championship at the end of last season, alongside Fulham and Cardiff City. The Canaries finished the season only three points behind Watford, and the club is betting their time in the Championship is only temporary.
The Premier League season will wrap up on Saturday May 23rd in 10 separate football stadiums across the country. The final date will also determine the final Premier League team that will be relegated down to the Championship next season.
Two days later, Middlesbrough and Norwich City will clash at Wembley. The winner will join Bournemouth and Watford in the Premier League next season, while the loser will remain in the Championship for at least another season.
