Middlesbrough Reclaims Championship Top Spot Over Derby County

Middlesbrough reclaimed the top spot on the Championship table with a 3-0 win over Millwall.  The win elevated the Boro above their closest rivals at Derby, who were shut out 2-0 against Brighton.

Middlesbrough and Derby have engaged in a battle for the top spot on the league table for weeks.  The two sides have also been challenged by AFC Bournemouth, and most recently by Watford, who elevated into third place on the table with a 1-0 win over Fulham.

Only the top two teams on the table will automatically advance to the Premier League at the end of the season.  And with 7 teams within 6 points of each other at the top of the table, every game and every point will count over the remaining 11 games of the Championship season.

If the Boro are betting they will finish as the top team in the league, every player on the squad may want to adapt the attitude of Jelle Vossen.  The 25 year old striker, nicknamed the Magician by fans, scored the final goal against Millwall with 12 minutes left on the game clock.

Vossen says he will personally treat every remaining game this season as a Cup final, and will leave 100 percent of his game on the pitch every weekend.

“The next game is another final, and with 11 games left, we have 11 big finals.  Every weekend the table can change a lot so we have to just keep focused and doing our jobs.”

Vossen and his teammates play a tough away game on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.  Meanwhile, Derby plays hosts to Birmingham, a team firmly in the middle of the pack on the table.  It will be an exciting weekend as well as remaining 11 weeks in the Championship as these two sides battle to be the best.
