Aguero Closing in on Kane in Golden Boot Race
The race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot just got a whole lot more interesting.
Harry Kane netted a brilliant headed goal in Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Arsenal at the weekend, to take his tally for the season to 23. At that point, those who had gone in on 188BET’s price of 1.50 when we discussed this market a month ago were probably feeling fairly pleased with themselves.
A couple of hours later, the smug grin had probably been replaced by a look of anguish after Sergio Aguero helped himself to four goals as Manchester City thumped Leicester City 5-1.
Aguero was priced up at 6.00 a month ago, when he trailed Kane by five. The gap between them has been trimmed to two and Aguero looks hungry for goals.
With City failing to bring in a new striker in the January transfer window, and Gabriel Jesus still a few weeks away from full fitness, the Argentina superstar will be in the starting XI.
The five goals plundered against Leicester lifted City’s season tally to 79. That is 27 more than the 52 Spurs have managed in the same period. It doesn’t take a degree in quantum physics to come to the conclusion that Aguero will get his fair share of chances between now and the end of the season.
Kane is also the focal point of the Tottenham attack, so the case can be made that the England man will get his fair share of chances also. He took one of them against Arsenal, but he passed up three other openings – so he too will continue to rack up the goals.
While last month’s price of 6.00 with 188BET for the City man has gone, there’s a solid case to be made that he can dethrone the Spurs striker.
But before Liverpool fans kick up a fuss, it has to recognised that it is not a two-horse race. Mo Salah has 22 goals to his name, which is a remarkable number for a player who is not an out-and-out striker. There was a fear that the supply line would dry up following Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona, but the Egyptian has netted five in as many games in the league since the Brazilian departed Anfield.
With three in-form contenders playing for sides who fashion plenty of chances, the race for the Golden Boot looks set to go all the way to the end of the season.
